Strategy to raise self-esteem
in young people and adults across the UK
and the rest of the World
Introduction
Great Britain and indeed the rest of the World is currently faced with an epidemic of bullying in our school system and workplace. The problems this creates are significant, potentially causing serious and long-lasting emotional damage to both the bullies and victims. The root cause of this widespread form of anti-social behaviour is a lack of self-esteem and the long-term effects of this are impacting on the lives of our children in a profoundly negative way.
The reason for this collectively suffered lack of self-esteem, which is so damaging to our children and our societal structures, can be traced to a number of key lifestyle and family changes that have taken place in recent times.
The primary driving factor for many children is that they have little or no discipline in their lives. This is coupled with a more general need for a disciplined framework that is not being properly met; parents, teachers and the police often feel unable to properly introduce discipline even when an obvious need does arise. It is increasingly clear that a pampered and easy life style does little to encourage effort, determination or the development of social skills unless there is a well-defined structure and focus. The ease with which we can, and do, replace love and affection with material things and the abundance of ‘easy’ entertainment are contributory drivers to this general picture.
Society now functions in such a way that requires parents to spend less and less quality interactive time with their children. This sends each child a loud and clear message, which is often interpreted as ‘Nobody Cares’. This constant negative affirmation damages a child’s self-esteem and the end result is that many of our children are growing up with an unhealthy and negative opinion of themselves. This is causing a permanent negative state of mind and in turn is leading to many of the problems we are seeing in society today.
‘They wouldn’t behave in this way if they had a higher opinion of themselves’.
Combined with this is a noticeable inability to get in touch with reality, fuelled by an abundance of negative computer games, DVD’s and a scandal obsessed media that propagates drug abuse, violence and celebrity culture. It is unsurprising that many of the younger generation feel negative, unloved and unaware of what older generations perceive to be normal human decency. With boundaries and moral and ethical standards so often blurred, it is no surprise that there is a resultant and pervasive negative culture in the younger generation. This negative state renders many children unable to apply themselves and severely damages their ability to learn and progress at school. Conversely, a positive state of mind is conducive to learning. This is illustrated in our most successful schools, which are almost exclusively those that focus on education as a whole-life experience and provide varied activities outside of examination-focused learning. This broadening of outlook increases structure and introduces positive and constructive activity to the lives of pupils; in turn this tends to lead to fewer problems with bad behaviour and better academic results.
Simply put the children of today need more love and attention and less exposure to negative influences if they are to thrive and achieve their potential.
We all know of examples where a wealthy and successful family gives all the material possessions available to their child, but they are so busy making money and enjoying their good fortune that they neglect to give the child time, love and affection. Often the result is an insecure and dysfunctional young person with a serious self-esteem problem. This scenario is now happening, to a lesser material extent but with the same emotional results, on an unprecedented scale.
Taken as a whole the younger generation today is thinking in a more negative way than that of twenty or thirty years ago. The negative energy that this thinking generates impacts on us all and the inevitable result is a vicious circle, with even more negative energy created.
The manifestations of this great mass of negative energy are evident everywhere we look, service in this country is at an all time low, bad manners are now accepted as normal, lack of respect, drug abuse, muggings, gun crime, stabbings, gang culture and violence are increasingly becoming normal everyday occurrences. We as a nation are slipping into a dysfunctional collective state of mind and this desperately needs to be addressed. Parents can no longer be blamed because many of them know no better. We are heading down a dangerously negative pathway and unless we do something now to turn this around things are only going to get worse; the politicians of today are the people we must look to for help because only they have the power to actually change things.
Perhaps ironically bullying offers us an opportunity to begin to put the greater problem right. We must pursue a plan of action that will not only halt bullying in its tracks but will also make a significant impact in terms of the level of self-esteem right across the UK. This project will work, but it must have full support and a ‘whole school, whole country’ approach to ensure that it achieves maximum results. This is much, much more than just another anti-bullying course. By raising the self-esteem of our younger generation we can realise benefits that will be substantial and across the board.
We propose a four-pronged approach to stop bullying and raise the self-esteem of this country.
Schools
Every school in Britain to run our simple and proven one-hour anti-bullying course once a year.
This course teaches children more than just how the bullying process works, we look at:
- The importance of self-esteem and how your life is influenced by what you believe you deserve.
- How you absorb information in your formative years, which in turn forms your comfort zones, which act as self-monitoring boundaries within your life.
- The vitally important role that your inner child (subconscious mind) plays and an assessment of you're amazing but true potential.
- From secondary school age the fundamental workings of ‘High-vibrational thinking’, which gives a real insight into how this world of ours actually ticks.
A whole school approach is the only answer and this course not only educates children but also teachers, running it every year from 5-16 years old will have massive positive benefits; bullying is a simple behaviour pattern and one that anybody of any age can understand. We will change a child’s perception of what a bully is. This turns their thinking around, children quickly realise that it is the bully that has the problem and to be a bully is extremely ‘Un Cool’.
Bullying is such a prolific behaviour pattern throughout society today that any schools suggesting that they do not have a bullying problem are simply showing an ignorance of the subject. Bullying pervades life at all levels and can take many subtle forms, many of which are just as damaging as the overt ‘playground bullying’ that is the most commonly prioritised form. Our approach breaks bullying down into a simple and understandable format that encapsulates all forms of bullying.
Many bullies do not even realise they are bullies and are simply locked into a negative behaviour pattern, which to them is just the normal routine of life. Bullies need help to break free from their negative thoughts about themselves, it is these thoughts, which are creating the problem in the first place.
We include within the course materials a one-hour ‘how to build self-esteem’ course, which can be used by schools to help bullies and victims of bullying regain their confidence.
All of these materials are contained in training manuals that any teacher can deliver and teachers can be given training where required.
The best results will be achieved when every teacher is involved in delivering the work to their own class. This work is backed up by an action plan, which will keep the issue of bullying at the forefront throughout the year.
Our five-point action plan for schools to tackle bullying consists of the following:
1. Encourage every school to apply for and use our ‘How to Stop That Bully’ training pack enabling teachers and staff to access this information and use it within their school.
2. Encourage teachers to run ‘How to Stop that Bully’ course for all children, with a simplified version available to primary school age and a more detailed version, including high vibrational thinking, from secondary school age. The course needs to be run once a year with updates incorporated as it progresses.
3. Have each school class select six people for a bullying panel. (This can be done by any convenient method ie: alphabetical order, age order, etc, what is important is that all children experience being on the panel and share this responsibility.) This method also keeps the bullying situation active and constant. If a class is mixed a gender balance is encouraged. The panel would have one another to turn to for support if a bully turned their attentions on them. Bullies will, of course, also have their turn as panel members, encouraging responsibility and consideration for others. In addition to its direct benefits this provides a useful system of ‘monitoring from within’ and means that, even when no teachers are around, somebody is still watching. This would give each school year a bullying panel of between approximately twenty-four and forty-eight pupils, every month a new panel should be selected. Current bully monitors could wear a badge of responsibility to show their position. Children could confide in panel members if they were subject to bullying or if they witnessed bullying taking place. Children could also confide in panel members from the years above them if they felt this was necessary. The bullying panel would meet every two weeks with teachers to update reports on bullying giving the school a true and in depth picture of what is actually taking place.
4. A confidential school e-mail address and mobile phone number, to text, for children to report bullying anonymously if needed.
5. Any bullies and vulnerable victims that are identified would be placed on our simple one-hour ‘How to Feel Great about Yourself’ self-esteem building course (not necessarily together), to enable them to gain an greater understanding of why they are bullying, or to understand that being bullied is not their fault but is a weakness of the bully, and to help them increase their self-esteem.
Children should be encouraged to report any incidents of bullying that take place no matter how minor they may seem; this is important to gain a true and clear picture. This also gets the message across to the bullies that this school has a ‘Zero Tolerance Bullying Programme’. Many bullies may not even be aware that they are bullying and will need to have any bullying incidents brought to their attention in order for them to understand the implications of their actions. It is important that bullies are dealt with in a strict but also understanding manner, so as not to strengthen their negative thinking patterns about themselves.
The action plan and course work is supported by a comprehensive anti-bullying policy, which will help the schools with procedures and guidance.
Teachers
Teachers can apply for a training manual for their class and a teacher’s booklet for further reference. Further training is also available where required. It is important to the project that all teachers become familiar with the bullying process and understand the signs, which are glaringly obvious when you know what to look for. This new insight will enable teachers to very quickly identify bullies and children who are being bullied, giving valuable time to correct things before more serious damage is done.
We need an all teacher approach in order for this work and this can easily be achieved due to the relative simplicity of the training programme and manuals. Simply reading through the teacher’s booklet and course training manual will empower teachers with an in depth insight into the bullying process. Testimony to the course’s user friendly format is the fact that out of the teachers (over 30) who have so far delivered this course, none have asked for any training or further help. The training manual can be read through thoroughly in twenty minutes and the booklet in fifteen minutes, that is less than one hour’s work for the teacher to gain an understanding of the bullying process. The result is that less time needs to be spent training teachers on costly day long courses and that time and funding can be better utilised in the classroom.
Parents
Each child will be given a booklet to take home to their parents, which runs through the course again and offers advice to any parents who may have a child that is being bullied or is a bully. Our website provides full details of our anti-bullying policy and procedures for parents to follow if necessary.
A more in depth and informative booklet will be available from our website free of charge and updated information will be posted as we progress. Training courses will be available for parents, if required, and assistance will be available from our telephone service. We are already contacted by many parents concerned for the welfare of their children and we will continue to send out booklets on how to deal with bullying.
Workplace
Workplace bullying is more commonplace than many people realise, with every workplace suffering some form of bullying. Often it can be so subtle that it goes virtually unnoticed, with even the victims sometimes unaware that they are being bullied.
Just because someone does not appreciate that behaviour is “bullying” when it is directed against them does not mitigate the potential impact on their emotional wellbeing and self-confidence.
On the other hand workplace bullying can also be overt and can have catastrophic consequences for the victim and the overall work environment.
Whatever the intensity there are always negative repercussions, in extreme cases businesses can suffer so badly that they are forced to close. Sick days, lower production levels and poor quality work are a few of the negative symptoms of workplace bullying.
Employers need to realise how much damage this terrible sickness can inflict on their businesses and all of their staff. Understanding the bullying process is the first step to gaining control.
Statistics show that 47% of Britain’s employees have witnessed bullying and 10% have been bullied in the last six months, with 18 million workings days lost each year at a cost of around £12 billion every year. The facts speak for themselves: bullying is costing the economy many billions of pounds every year.
Many staff who are subjected to bullying at work will see the negative effects spiral out and damage other areas of their lives. A negative state created by being bullied at work can easily cause problems in relationships, finances and every area of your personal life. Severe cases can even cause depression, which could adversely affect the rest of somebody’s life in a very negative way.
HVT Bullying offers a solution to the problem of bullying through a ‘whole workplace approach’.
This is in contrast to many other schemes that tend to focus in the main with the incidents and aftermath of bullying rather than the cause.
This education approach to the problem of workplace bullying will ensure best possible results for businesses, maintaining productivity at the highest levels.
The concept of HVT (high-vibrational thinking) enables a simple understanding of bullying, which will have many other benefits right throughout the workplace.
Education is key and this is achieved through our simple but effective staff hand booklet.
Every member of staff will feel the benefit after reading this booklet and will have a better understanding of their own behaviour and that of those around them.
This new and simple perspective on bullying will empower you with the ability to see bullying everywhere that it is taking place. The bullies will be stripped bare and their cycle of constantly generating negativity will become obvious for all to see. This will help the bullies to identify their own negative behaviour patterns and will in turn empower them to be able to deal with it.
Many bullies are locked into the bullying process through no fault of their own and identifying the behaviour pattern is the first step to overcoming it. Bullies often need help as much, if not more than, their victims as they are suffering from rigid negative thinking about themselves.
This is the catalyst for all of their hurtful behaviour. Many bullies will not even realise that they are bullies and when the realisation sets in that they are in fact bullying other people, they are often devastated at their own behaviour. Acceptance of the fact that they have carried out bullying is the first step for them to disengage from the cycle that they have become locked into. A retraining of their thinking process is needed, helping them to break free from the negative thinking that is damaging their lives. This can be achieved through visualisation and affirmations, which will help them think more positively about themselves and the world around them.
As adults receive this education through the workplace booklet this will also have positive benefits for the younger generation. The more that parents understand the bullying process the better it will be for our children.
Our comprehensive workplace anti-bullying package is available free to all businesses in the UK and consists of the following:

Summary
This proposal offers an opportunity to make a real start on this important and necessary project. The simplicity of our work makes it user friendly; the more complex approaches have been shown to be too unwieldy and are unworkable.
‘Keeping it simple is the key, we all know that’.
Our plan encompasses the entire nation and that is essential to ensure success. Everybody will be reached, which sets this project apart from other anti-bullying proposals, that are all too often focussed only on the schools and focussed only on dealing with the victims of bullying and not getting to the core of the problem, helping the bullies to break the cycle.
The bullying problem has actually given us a wonderful opportunity to bring invaluable work into the school system and workplace, which can make a real difference. Future generations will benefit if we can make a start now and begin to turn this wave of negative thinking around.
Of course many people in Britain today think in a very positive way, but the balance has been tipped in recent years towards a more negative orientated viewpoint. This worrying trend is gathering momentum on a daily basis and it is this that we must change, in order to halt the decline of many of the young people in this country.
As highlighted earlier the majority of the problems we are seeing in society today stem from people thinking negatively about themselves and the world around them. This work will reach to the heart of this problem and empower the people of this country to gain some control over their thinking, instead of being controlled by their thinking. This in turn will have a positive effect and collectively, as a nation, we will be on the road back to regaining our self-esteem and our self-respect.
This project is FREE to all Schools, Businesses and any other organisations across the UK and the rest of the World. All you have to do is go to Order FREE Anti-bullying pack and fill in the email form. Please indicate whether you are a Primary School, Secondary School or a Business and we will email the relevant Training Manuals, Anti-bullying Policies and Booklets etc, straight back to you.
This work is far too important to hinder the momentum of it by imposing financial restrictions, we feel making it completely FREE of charge will enable every organisation to have the opportunity of receiving the work. A small cost is required for hard copies.
What we do need is help in letting Schools and Businesses know it is available, if you can help by directing your database to this strategy or promoting it through your networks, that would be very much appreciated.
